Important – Previously Tuned Vehicles

We are increasingly seeing vehicles where customers attempt to use an SCT X3 or SCT X4 on a PCM that has previously been tuned using PCMTEC.

If the previous tuner has enabled the PCMTEC calibration lock / tune protection feature, the PCM may be intentionally protected against being read or reflashed by other tuning software.

In this situation, an SCT X3 or X4 may:

• Fail to read the original vehicle calibration
• Report an unsupported or corrupt stock file
• Fail during the initial programming process
• Be unable to save a valid original backup
• Refuse to load an SCT custom tune
• Display programming or recovery errors

This does not necessarily mean the SCT tuner itself is faulty.

The existing PCM calibration may first need to be identified, unlocked, restored or replaced with a suitable factory calibration before SCT programming can proceed.

Service Includes

• Review of SCT device and vehicle strategy information
• Identification of the currently installed PCM calibration where possible
• Check for indications of previous aftermarket tuning
• Assessment of PCMTEC/SCT compatibility issues
• Identification of the correct factory ECU calibration where available
• Preparation of a suitable recovery or stock calibration
• Assistance recovering the PCM from failed SCT programming
• Verification of PCM strategy and calibration information
• Advice on returning the PCM to a known-good calibration before SCT tuning

Before Purchasing

If your vehicle has ever been tuned previously, particularly with PCMTEC, please advise us before attempting to program it with an SCT device.

Where possible, provide:

• Vehicle year and model
• Engine and transmission
• VIN
• PCM catch code
• SCT device serial number
• SCT device model – X3 or X4
• Exact SCT error code/message
• Details of any previous tune or tuner
• Whether PCMTEC was previously used
• Whether the vehicle currently starts and runs

Additional Programming May Be Required

Depending on the existing calibration, the PCM may require:

• Factory calibration restoration
• PCMTEC unlock or removal of tune protection
• Bench programming
• PCM recovery programming
• PCM replacement or cloning
• PATS / parameter reset
• Additional diagnostic work

These services are not automatically included in the base tune recovery service and will be quoted where required.

Important

Do not repeatedly attempt to flash the vehicle after an SCT programming failure.

Repeated unsuccessful programming attempts can complicate recovery and, in some cases, leave the PCM unable to communicate or start the vehicle.

This service does not automatically include a performance tune, SCT device unlock, replacement SCT device, PCM hardware repair, PATS programming or unrelated diagnostic work unless specifically quoted.
